Monét Lewis
Master of Science in Applied Psychology
Class of 2023
A native Californian, Monét Lewis now resides in Austin Texas with her husband, two daughters, and three dogs. Prior to enrolling in the MAPP program, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Psychology online in 2020 while also being a stay-at-home-mom.
Monét currently works as a research analyst for The Harris Poll, a full-service market research organization. “I feel incredibly fortunate to pursue my passion in the field I love while working for an exceptional organization like The Harris Poll, where I have the opportunity to contribute to meaningful research that drives impactful decisions,” she says of her job.
She took the time to talk to us about her MAPP experience and how it has helped her advance her career.
Why did you decide to apply to the MAPP program?
"I earned my bachelor’s degree in May 2020, a time marked by the uncertainty of the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite actively seeking full-time employment, the challenging job market made it difficult to secure opportunities. This period of reflection led me to recognize the value of furthering my education to deepen my expertise and refine the skills I developed during my undergraduate studies.
"The MAPP program was a perfect fit for me because it aligns with my passion for understanding human behavior and its application in professional settings. It offered a unique opportunity to gain advanced knowledge and practical tools that allow me to make a meaningful impact in my career and contribute to the field in significant ways."
“It felt as though the program was designed specifically for me.”
Did you consider other schools?
"I did not, because I have always admired USC. Its reputation as a top-tier institution has long captured my interest. Additionally, during my research I found that there are not many highly recognized universities that offer online master’s programs in this field of study, which made USC stand out even more. When I discovered the MAPP program and explored the details of what the degree entails, the decision became clear—it felt as though the program was designed specifically for me."
What was your experience in the MAPP program like?
"My experience in the MAPP program was truly exceptional—every course, professor, and project exceeded my expectations. Each class offered invaluable insights, and much of what I learned continues to shape my professional life today. Through the USC online Master of Science in Applied Psychology (MAPP) program, I cultivated a unique blend of skills in consumer and organizational psychology.
"While my primary focus was on consumer psychology, the program provided me with expertise in diverse areas, including consumer insights, talent management and recruitment, industrial and organizational (I/O) psychology, user experience (UX) research, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), organizational development, and other related fields. This comprehensive approach equipped me with the tools to excel in a variety of professional contexts."
“My experience in the MAPP program was truly exceptional—every course, professor, and project exceeded my expectations.”
As an online student, can you discuss the support you received from faculty and staff?
"The support was abundant. Given my circumstances (being a stay-at-home parent of a four-year-old and newborn), pursuing an online program was essential, and I was already familiar with the format, having completed my undergraduate degree online.
"However, the instructors at USC stood out—they were exceptionally well-equipped to teach in the online environment and consistently offered support whenever I needed it. The accessibility and dedication of the faculty made a significant difference in my learning experience and ensured I felt connected and supported throughout the program."
Were there any specific courses or instructors who stood out?
"There were so many exceptional courses and instructors that it’s hard to narrow it down. Since I chose the Consumer Psychology route over the I/O route, the courses that had the biggest impact on me were Research Methods in Applied Psychology with Dr. Meredith Lepley, User Experience (UX) Research with Dr. Jason Buhle, and Quantitative Methods with Dr. Luke Thelen. However, all the instructors were truly incredible.
"Dr. Steve Westberg, Dr. Julie Lyon, Dr. Francesca Puggelli, Dr. Mona Farid-Nejad, and Dr. Catherine Neubauer each brought unique expertise and passion to their courses, which greatly enriched my learning experience.
"One of the standout courses for me was the academic treatise, where we had the freedom to conduct research on a topic of our choice. For my project, I focused on "Rainbow-Washing" and its impact on consumer purchase behavior and brand loyalty. Additionally, I investigated how LGBTQIA+-themed marketing materials are perceived by audiences and offered recommendations for organizations on how to authentically incorporate LGBTQIA+-themed marketing and advertising."
“There truly is no other program like it, offering a unique blend of academic rigor, practical application, and personal growth.”
How are you applying what you learned in the MAPP program in your career?
"I use consumer psychology principles to understand what drives customer behavior, preferences, and decision-making. This allows me to design surveys, analyze data, and provide actionable insights that help our clients develop targeted marketing strategies and improve customer experiences. Advanced quantitative analysis techniques are essential for interpreting survey data, identifying trends, and drawing statistically valid conclusions. These skills enable me to provide precise, data-driven recommendations to clients."
What are your future goals?
"Professionally, I aim to continue deepening my expertise and experience as a research analyst. I find great purpose in the work I do, as it contributes to understanding human behavior and decision-making, ultimately helping organizations create positive change. I like to think that my efforts help make the world a better place—after all, knowledge is power, and using it wisely can drive meaningful progress."
“The accessibility and dedication of the faculty made a significant difference in my learning experience and ensured I felt connected and supported throughout the program.”
What advice do you have for students who are considering MAPP?
"If you’re considering the MAPP program, my advice is simple: Do it. Giving yourself the gift of furthering your education is a profound investment in yourself and your future. It’s an opportunity I don’t take lightly, and if you’re fortunate enough to have the chance to pursue MAPP, don’t hesitate—go for it. There truly is no other program like it, offering a unique blend of academic rigor, practical application, and personal growth."
